چکیده

According to Burrows et al.’s acoustic mechanism for core-collapse supernova explosions, the primary, l = 1, g-mode in the core of the proton-neutron star is excited to an energy of ∼ 10 ergs and damps by the emission of sound waves. Here we calculate the damping of the primary mode by the parametric instability, i.e., by nonlinear, 3-mode coupling between the low-order primary mode and pairs of high-order g-modes. We show that the primary mode is strongly coupled to highly resonant, neutrino damped pairs with n & 10; such short wavelength interactions cannot be resolved in the simulations. We find that the parametric instability saturates the primary mode energy at ∼ 10 ergs, well below the energy needed to drive an explosion. We therefore conclude that acoustic power is unlikely to be energetically significant in core-collapse supernova explosions.

Saturation of the R-mode Instability

Rossby waves (r-modes) in rapidly rotating neutron stars are unstable because of the emission of gravitational radiation. As a result, the stellar rotational energy is converted into both gravitational waves and r-mode energy. The saturation level for the r-mode energy is a fundamental parameter needed to determine how fast the neutron star spins down, as well as whether gravitational waves wil...

Nonaxisymmetric Magnetorotational Instability in Proto-Neutron Stars

We investigate the stability of differentially rotating proto-neutron stars (PNSs) with a toroidal magnetic field. Stability criteria for nonaxisymmetric MHD instabilities are derived using a local linear analysis. PNSs are expected to have much stronger radial shear in the rotation velocity compared to normal stars. We find that nonaxisymmetric magnetorotational instability (NMRI) with a large...

R-modes in Accreting and Young Neutron Stars

Recent work has raised the exciting possibility that r-mode pulsations (Rossby waves) in rotating neutron star cores may be strong gravitational wave sources. Rapidly rotating young neutron stars born in supernovae enter the r-mode instability region within the first minutes of their lives and may spin down by substantial amounts due to gravitational radiation from r-modes. Accreting neutron st...

Gravitational waves from newly born, hot neutron stars

We study the gravitational radiation associated to the non–radial oscillations of newly born, hot neutron stars. The frequencies and damping times of the relevant quasi–normal modes are computed for two different models of proto– neutron stars, at different times of evolution, from its birth until it settles down as a cold neutron star. We find that the oscillation properties of proto–neutron s...

Bulk viscosity, r-modes, and the early evolution of neutron stars

We discuss the effect of nonlinear bulk viscosity and the associated reheating on the evolution of newly born, rapidly rotating neutron stars with r-modes destabilized through the Chandrasekhar-Friedman-Schutz (CFS) mechanism. Bulk viscosity in these stars is due to the adjustment of the relative abundances of different particle species as the density of a fluid element is perturbed. It becomes...
